Volunteer Opportunity: Non-profit Board Member

Overview

Many non-profits struggle to use data to support their missions and maximize their impact. This is because they often lack the capacity and expertise to do this work themselves, and external consultants can be expensive and unfamiliar with the specialized needs of the non-profit sector.

Purpose Analytics is a non-profit organization that exists to bridge this gap. Through affordable solutions designed for non-profits and developed with impact in mind, we help our customers to realize the potential of data-informed storytelling, decision-making, and strategic thinking.

We operate on a fee-for-service model and we have been financially self-sustaining since incorporating in 2020. Furthermore, to advance our mission of building the data capacity of the non-profit sector, we apply a portion of our income to public benefit projects. This includes convening a network of non-profit data analysts and developing free services and tools.

Joining our board of directors provides a unique opportunity to leverage your interests, skills, or experience in data and technology within a non-profit context and to support our organization in delivering on its mission.

Responsibilities

Our board of directors has supported the development of the organization as it has grown and evolved. As a board member, you will play a crucial role in guiding our organization’s evolution towards fulfilling its mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Governance: Actively participate in board meetings, contribute management insights, towards making informed decisions to ensure the organization operates ethically and effectively. Identify potential risks and challenges facing the organization and collaborate with board members and staff to develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans.
  • Financial Oversight: Review and provide advice on organization's finances, including budgeting, reporting, and cost management. Assist in developing and implementing strategies to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Advocacy and Networking: Serve as an ambassador for the organization, promoting awareness and advocating for its vision and services within the sector. Engage personal and professional networks to promote the organization.
  • Board Development and Succession Planning: Help board development through implementing key performance and evaluation measures and formalized roles. Contribute to succession planning efforts by identifying and recruiting qualified candidates for board vacancies.
Qualifications
  • Commitment to the mission of Purpose Analytics
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills in board and/or management roles
  • Expertise in the following areas would add to the board:
    • Human resources: policy development and implementation; organizational culture
    • Analytics: advanced data applications to introduce to non-profits
    • Data risk management: privacy; cybersecurity; legal implications
Commitment
  • Attend 4-6 board meetings annually (typically 2 hours each)
  • Participate in task groups as appropriate
  • Estimated total time commitment: 3 hours per month.
